Dear Trombonists, liebe Posaunisten/in,
Achtung! Please react quickly--April 15, 2008 deadline!
Have you always wanted to be in a serious, professional trombone quartet?
Do you have the ability to work long hours with the same three people day after day, week after week, month after month?
Are you ready to commit to a noble artistic cause for 2 years? Would you like to be involved in something bigger that your own personal goals?
The Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik in Trossingen, Germany is looking for qualified trombone and bass trombone students entering at the Masters level or post-Masters level to form two serious international trombone quartets and/or trios, to be coached and mentored by Prof. Abbie Conant and her colleagues at Trossingen.
The Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik in Trossingen
is one of
Germany
's major, university-level conservatories with an internationally acclaimed
faculty located an hour south of
Stuttgart
on the edge of the
Black Forest
. The Early Music Institute is one of the most important worldwide.
Charles Toet
of Concerto Palatino is the sackbut instructor. Professor Conant’s students
hold positions in the major orchestras and ensembles of
Germany
incl. Bayreuth (two members,) Stuttgart Opera, Radio Orchestra of Stuttgart,
The Hamburg Symphony, The Ulm Opera, Ensemble Modern, The German National Jazz
Orchestra, The National German Youth Orchestra (Junge Deutsche Philharmonie),
The Orchestra of the Nations, etc. The Blech Forest Trombone Ensemble of
MHS Trossingen won the Emory Remington Trombone Ensemble Competition in 1995.
You will earn your Masters level (or post-Masters) performance degree (2 years) performing as a chamber ensemble chiefly in the area of the Black Forest.
(Foreign students will deepen their understanding of European musical traditions,
while improving their German language skills, and immerse themselves in one of the cradles of Western music.)
The ensemble will be assisted in
obtaining concerts in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland once interesting programs are developed. The commitment is for two years and the goal is to develop your ensemble with professional guidance into a significant musical force from which you can base your livelihood. Opportunities to play professionally abound. It is not necessary to apply as an ensemble, but the applicant must have the talent and desire to work
intensively with others as a prerequisite.
The quartets will be formed according to playing abilities, stylistic talent, personalities, and compatibility The curriculum allows for plenty of free time which you will need for rehearsing. All music will be performed by memory. The quartets will commission their own pieces, and either arrange music for themselves or commission others to arrange for them. They will develop their own
strategies for promotion. The debut concert is scheduled for mid-November. The deadline for application is April 15, 2008
with no exceptions.
The application in English
is here.
The fax number for the school is: 011 (49) 7425-9491-48.
Tuition is 500 Euros (~$761) per semester and living expenses are quite low because Trossingen is a small town about an hour south of Stuttgart on the edge of the Black Forest--one of the
most economical areas in which to live in Germany. You must prove that you have studied
German
(for example include a certificate of completion from the Goethe Institute, a letter from any language school, or from a university German instructor that vouches for a rudimentary knowledge of the German language.) Your degree will
be as a soloist for which each student will play two final, graded public recitals during your last semester.
