An Architectual Freudean Slip?
A creepy and of course unintentional correlation between the Metropolitan Opera House and the “Honor Hall” that became an iconic image of the Nazi Party rally grounds in Nuremburg in the 1930s. The Honor Hall was built as a memorial to the 9,885 soldiers from Nuremburg that died in WWI, but was appropriated by the Nazis and used to commemorate the 16 men who died in Hitler’s failed Beer hall Putsch of 1923. I’ve always found this architectural similarity weird and unpleasant, and compounded by the rigorous and aggressive control of Lincoln Center Plaza by the NYC police. The Chagall murals in the lobby help, but not always quite enough.
